- Birdie Bread
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 2/3 cup flour
- 2 tspn aluminum free baking powder*
- 1 tspn each paprika, cayenne, parsley, cinnamon, and fresh ground black pepper
- 1/3 cup water or fruit juice
- 1 egg with shell (finely ground)**
- 3 whole, fresh jalapenos, chopped
- 1/2 apple, chopped (no seeds!)***
- 1/2 cup each frozen corn and peas
- 1/3 cup frozen spinach
- 1/2 of a raw sweet potato finely chopped
Instructions: Bake at 450 for 25 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. This is just a base recipe, substitutions can be made. I use only organic fruits and vegetables for my birds and have not been able to find organic jalapenos so I omit these. I also do not put in spinach but put in other veggies. You can add anything that is good for your birds to this recipe. While the toothpick does come out clean after baking because of the amount of fruit and vegetables in this recipe the bread is fairly moist.
This recipe fits in an 8X8 baking dish or can be doubled to fit a 9X13 pan. Store a 2 - 3 day supply of bread in the refrigerator, place the rest in tightly sealed packages and freeze. Thaw as needed.
*While aluminum has not been found to harm birds many feel since they do not need it they do not want to add it their bird's diet. Baking powder can be omitted from this recipe but then the bread will be very dense.
**Egg shells are a good source of calcium but there must be no sharp edges than could damage a bird's crop. I omit the shells because I cannot get them ground fine enough.
***Apple seeds contain cyanide and should not be fed to our birds.
